Carlo runs an inn and is married to Amelia but, more than a husband, he is a vicious master who exploits her in the kitchen and in bed without ever gratifying her with an affectionate gesture.
Amelia, saddened by her marriage, tries to escape from reality by transforming her squalid liaisons with her husband into relationships with Rolando, a customer of the inn with whom she dreams of running away.
