Kenna's Impression:
I've traveled to more than forty countries and when planning a trip one of my biggest decisions is what lenses to bring. The questions I ask myself are many. What will my primary subject matter be? How much variety of subject matter will I have? Will my subjects be moving or stationary, animals or people, street or landscape, or all of the above? What kind of physical activities will I be doing? What will the weather be like? What size and weight camera bag do I want to carry? The answers to these questions are crucial for my selection of travel lenses.
To celebrate my recent birthday, I wanted to take a relaxing tropical island vacation. My goal was to go snorkeling every single day. My friends and I chose the island of Cozumel off of the Mayan Riviera in Mexico for a picture-perfect holiday. This trip was different than most of my travels. I didn’t know what I’d want to be photographing once I got there.
I’ve led photography tours for the past ten years to destinations including Cuba, Bhutan, Nepal, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Bali where my absolute priority is photography over everything else. “Photo, photo, photo!,” is a phrase I usually say all day everyday because I have a hard time putting my camera down when I see a great shot. Instead, this trip was “snorkel, pool, snorkel!” Yet you really can’t take the photo out of a photographer. I’m the type of photographer that is scanning every scene for what image I would be creating, even if it’s just an image in my mind’s eye. You know how it is.
Enter the brand new TAMRON 28-300mm F/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD (Model A074) for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. I was fortunate to test drive this versatile “all-in-one” zoom lens in Cozumel. The idea of never having to change the lens on my camera for an entire week was absolutely liberating. Freedom to carry one lightweight lens on a Sony α7R IV in my purse or beach bag? Yes please.
This lens + camera combo was easy to throw over my shoulder walking around the little town of San Miguel. The color reproduction of the brightly painted walls and murals is gorgeous, not to mention the clear turquoise water. The bokeh, smooth skin tone and crisp focus for portraits of my friends pleased us all. I loved capturing little details in markets. The MOD at the wide 28mm end of the lens allowed me to get as close as 0.19m (7.5") away from hats, dream catchers, bracelets, and decorative purses. In the marina I had access to 300mm at F7.1 to create that compression effect, as well as isolate details of the boats for painterly abstracts.
The high resolution for both landscapes and street scenes was most impressive with great detail in the corners. Cozumel can be a very windy island. I took advantage of the fast and precise auto focus and VC (Vibration Compensation) for snaps of moving objects, from speed boats to my friend’s scarf blowing the wind.
This lens does it all, which is perfect when you’re unsure in advance of what “it all” is going to be. The next time I go on a holiday I’ll take comfort in the fact that I can pack just the TAMRON 28-300mmVC and have everything I need to both relax and be creative with my photography on vacation.
