Have fun learning about how to make compound words. A compound word is made when two words are joined to form a new word. I show and say the first word and then show and say the second word. We put both words together to form a new compound word. This is great practice for Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes who are beginning to build the foundational language skills that today’s elementary school curriculum requires. Young children will develop their phonological awareness and phonics skills with this compound word song as they hear and see how two words make a new word. In the first part of this video I say the two words and then I say the compound word. In the second part of the video I say both words and leave the compound word answer black for your class to combine and give the compound word answer. This compound word song also helps children develop a good listening ear for the skill of hearing syllables in words. Have You Heard About Compound Words, is a simple, easy way to help make language development enjoyable for young children. It’s a great tool to start strengthening phonological awareness and phonics skills. It’s fun to put words together and create a compound word with a whole new meaning. A fun extension activity is to discuss if the compound word has a similar or different meaning than the words that it is made up from.
