New Year's Day in Spain has been celebrated on January 1 of each year in the Gregorian calendar since 1582. Unlike Christmas, New Year's Eve in this country is celebrated not in a domestic family circle, but in large and noisy companies. The inhabitants of Spain gather in the streets and squares, organize carnivals and pyrotechnic shows. On the last night of the passing year, Spaniards flock to the main squares of towns and cities of the country, waiting for the strike of the chimes and the ancient clock on the Post Office House. The event is broadcast on national and local television channels.
In Spain, Christmas lasts for two weeks, starting on Christmas Eve, December 24 and ending with the Day of the Three Magic Kings on January 6. During this period, Spaniards decorate their homes, stage carnivals and pyrotechnic shows, and put up creches - small miniature towns that recreate passages from Catholic tradition, such as the Birth of Jesus or the Adoration of the Kings.
On Christmas Day, Spaniards exchange gifts and spend time with family and friends around the table. Spaniards prepare many dishes on this day, including "turron," a sweet made of almonds and honey, "polvorones," a shortbread cookie, and "roscon de reyes," a ring of sweet dough decorated with fruit and nuts.
On Christmas Day, Spaniards also have a lottery, which is held on December 22. On this day, people buy lottery tickets to share with friends or family. Almost everyone wants to participate, and in the months leading up to Christmas, people buy lottery tickets to share with friends or family (to share the luck).
