hat's the highest G Force a human can endure?
Astronauts experience around 3 Gs during a launch but the average person can withstand 4-6G before passing out. That looks like this.
However, with training and often the use of a G suit, fighter pilots can stay conscious experiencing around 9Gs for a few seconds.
But one man wanted to push the limits of the human body. His name was Colonel John Stapp, a US Air Force Physician. He built a rocket propelled sled that ran on tracks, accelerating it to incredible speeds.
Although he started testing with dummies, he eventually got in the pilot's seat himself, accelerating to 632mph in just 5 seconds breaking the land speed record at the time. He then came to a complete stop in just 1.4 seconds experiencing 42.6Gs.
Although he was immediately rendered blind and suffered some breakages and bruises, he soon got back his sight and experienced no long term consequences.
However, one man topped this by a considerable margin. Kenny Brack, an indy car driver crashed going 220mph. The in car information system registered 214gs for a fraction of a second. The accident almost killed him but he eventually recovered and went back to racing.
Despite this, it’s thought that experiencing just 6Gs for a prolonged period of time could be fatal and a sudden impact generating 50-75gs is enough to kill you depending on your age and gender.
