Is being a police officer in the US really that dangerous?
Well in 2022, there were 118 police officer fatalaties according to the FBI. That figure may not surprise you considering police officers have to deal with a lot of dangers from high speed pursuits, felons with firearms and hostile acorns.
Of course the largest cause of death was felonious activity, that being individuals purposefully killing officers. The majority of these cases involved a firearm and started with routine traffic stops or police investigations. Nonetheless, 6 were completely unprovoked attacks.
But how about the other 58 officer deaths?
Well sadly all of these were accidents. The most common type being motor vehicle crashes. These accounted for 34 deaths in 2022. One other very common cause was officers exiting the vehicle on roadways and getting struck.
Nonetheless, there were 708,000 police officers in the US in 2022 so that would mean your chances of dying on duty was just 0.0167%.
Additionally, in 2020 the Bureau of Labor Statistics ranked the deadliest occupations. Police officers weren’t even even in the top 10, losing to jobs such as truck driver or even bin collectors. They instead placed 18th.
So in reality, being a US Police Officer is a lot less dangerous than you think!
