Sea urchins, tiny spiny marine creatures often found in UK coastal waters, may seem harmless but they can inflict serious injuries with their sharp spines. Stepping on a sea urchin results in a piercing pain as its spine penetrates the skin and sometimes breaks off in the wound. If left unchecked, these injuries can lead to complications such as infections, resulting in redness, swelling, and intensified pain. Severe cases may even bring on nausea and vomiting.

In the event of a sea urchin sting, it's critical to seek medical attention promptly. The embedded spine may need removal by a medical professional to prevent infection. Depending on the severity of the injury, doctors might prescribe antibiotics or recommend a tetanus booster shot.

While professional medical attention is crucial, there are also ways to alleviate pain and reduce infection risk at home. Soaking the affected area in warm water can help ease pain and promote healing, and over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can provide pain relief.

Prevention is the best approach to avoid sea urchin injuries. Be cautious while walking on rocks or areas with known sea urchin presence. When swimming or wading in shallow waters, wearing proper footwear is recommended for foot protection. Avoid handling sea urchins or any unfamiliar marine creatures to minimise the risk of injuries.
