Florida Rep Resurrects Billie Holiday Musical 'Lady Day' After Hurricane Ian
Find out how the Florida Repertory Theatre in Downtown Fort Myers, Florida resurrected its production of "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" -- a musical exploration of legendary singer Billie Holiday's heart-wrenching life story -- after Hurricane Ian flooded the historic Arcade Theatre building with close to four-feet of storm surge.
Starring Ebony Pullum as Billie Holiday and Garrick Vaughan as piano man Jimmy Powers, the show delves deeper into Holiday's tragic past, exploring themes of racism, substance abuse and loss. The Florida Rep suffered extreme water damage after Hurricane Ian, rendering the theatre's ArtStage Studio unusable. In spite of the devastation wrought by Ian, the production relaunched a few miles away at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers, Florida.
