As a longtime Canon shooter, I always picked up my Tamron 85mm. It was my go-to portrait lens. So, when I made the switch over to a Sony mirrorless camera, I needed to find a new favorite lens to photograph portraits of family and children. And the Tamron 70-180mm quickly became that new favorite for my portrait work. It's incredibly sharp, creates creamy bokeh, and beautiful backlit images that I adore.
Sony's image stabilization and the Tamron lens work great together. I can handhold the camera at low shutter speeds, and I'm able to capture perfectly sharp images even in lower light. As a children's photographer, my subjects are rarely still. I'm always directing my subjects to spin, dance, giggle or be playful with their family members. The lens is so lightweight and compact, it feels really good and stable in my hands and that lets me keep up with my active clients during long shoots easier than ever before.
When I'm photographing families and children, I'm often outdoors using natural light. My style of shooting has always been to shoot a little more wide open. And with the aperture range of 2.8 across the entire focal range, I'm able to capture the look I desire and keep my style consistent no matter what range I'm shooting in. I shot with Tamron 70-200mm for years, but now I'm loving the 70-180mm, with its small size and weight.
I get sharp images in all my compositions from 70-180, and I never feel like I can't get close enough. In fact, I can get as close as 10 and a half inches with the 70-180. I can easily capture those close-up portraits, and I find, I only need to take a step closer to get the same framing as I did with my 200mm. I wouldn't trade this small lens for anything. To me, the Tamron 70-180 is the perfect lens for my portrait work and I never leave home without it.
