In this new video from The Time Then channel we will show you Rare hand colored photos of Meiji Japan's daily life from the 1890s 🎥

After centuries of isolation and numerous failed Western attempts to open Japan to trade and international relations, the United States Navy sent Commodore C. Perry to Japan in 1853 along with a letter from President Millard Fillmore asking for trade relations, care for sailors who have been shipwrecked, and a location to store coal for steam ships.

The "black ships of wicked mein," sailing without oar or sail and spewing smoke, were first observed off the coast of Edo harbor on July 8, 1853. The goal was to serve as a turning point for the end of the feudal era and the start of the new era.

Japan could no longer isolate itself from the rest of the world; as the Emperor replied to the President the following spring, "we are ruled by compelling need."

The shogunate eventually lost the trust of the populace when it was unable to drive back the barbarians after already contending with a crumbling feudalist system, a faltering economy, and a lineage conflict.

The ports at Shinoda and Hakodate were inaugurated in February 1854. When Townsend Harris negotiated a commercial agreement with Japan in 1858, new ports opened up to the United States as well as to Britain, France, the Netherlands, Russia, and other Western nations.

Welcome to The Time Then channel where you can find a lot of intriguing historical photos from people, places, and more. The beautiful randomness of each image will surely entertain and amaze you for hours on end.

Some viewers might find the old pictures upsetting. The reputation of human nature and our history is unfortunate. Our predecessors were forced to capture images of war, torture, or bad events in order to commemorate certain events.
