Horses (lat. Equus) are the only modern genus of the equidae family (Equidae) of the equine order.
Cladistic analysis based on cranial and postcranial elements (30 taxa, 129 characters) supports the monophyly of the genus Equus and denies recognition of the genera Plesippus and Allohippus, supporting the origin of the desert zebra (Equus grevyi) and members of the zebra/donkey clade from European Stenon's horses. Recent genomic results confirm the monophyly of the genus Equus and indicate its origin around 4.0–4.5 million years ago.
