ow Do you become one of the Royal Marines Elite?
These guys are Mountain Leaders, they’ve specialised in mountain and arctic warfare, learning how to fight and survive in the world’s harshest conditions. But they aren’t just survivalists, in war time they’ll be the first on the ground, sneaking up to 200 miles behind enemy lines, watching and stalking the enemy, feeding vital information back to the brigade.
There are three levels of Mountain Leader.
Mountain Leader 3 is open to all royal marine ranks and focuses on surveillance, close target reconnaissance and vertical assaults. It starts with a selection course followed by 8 weeks of cliff climbing in Cornwall and mountain climbing in North Wales and Scotland.
Once completed you’ll likely be integrated into the reconnaissance troops. Upon reaching the rank of Corporal you’ll begin Mountain Leader 2 training. This lasts 34 weeks and covers vertical assault, mountain movements, Recon and Surveillance, and mountain and cold weather warfare.
If completed you’ll be able to operate as a ISTAR Patrol Leader and can teach military rock climbing to a UK Severe Standard.
Last but certainly not least is the ML1 Course. This is an 8 month course and you need to be a SNCO and have been ML2 qualified for at least 2 years to even begin it. ML1 personnel supervise and train all ranks in Mountain and Cold Weather warfare, operate as an ISTAR Patrol Manager and can lead, teach or supervise pretty much anything and everything mountain or survival based.
With such a high level of training you’ll likely serve in the Special Forces Support Group, Brigade Patrol troop or Commando Unit Recce Troops.
So What are you getting paid, well check back tomorrow for a video just on that?
