People in Japan during the Yayoi Period often made contact with the Chinese court (the Han and Wei dynasties). They sent numerous diplomatic missions to China, and received invaluable gifts in return.

China saw the various Yayoi kingdoms as tributary states, which had to pay homage to the emperor.
