The Austin Film Society and the City of Austin are celebrating 50 years of Austin Public Access Television!
On June 25th from 12–4 PM, we’ll be hosting a free open house at Austin Public, the city’s public access TV station and state-of-the-art community media center (1143 Northwestern Avenue). We’re inviting the public to show up whenever they’d like during that time to explore the space, take an interactive tour of the facilities, and enjoy complimentary refreshments as we commemorate five decades of this vital local institution.
We’re not just celebrating the fact that it’s been half a century. We’re also celebrating the first group who banded together to establish Austin Community Television in 1973. We’re celebrating the people that went up to Mount Larson to wire the playback device into the cable system. We’re celebrating the countless creators who’ve hosted shows on channels 10, 11, and 16 over the years. And we’re celebrating the role that public access television has in giving local communities a voice, especially those who wouldn’t otherwise have access to cablecasting, content distribution, or production resources.
This is a major milestone, and we want you to be a part of it.
