In this lesson, we shall learn the basics of a capacitor.
A capacitor is a passive element that is designed to store energy in its electric field. A capacitor is made up of two metallic plates separated by a dielectric material (insulator). The two metallic plates are spaced by a distance d.
The physical dimensions influence the capacitance of the capacitor.
The capacitance C = εA / d, where
ε is the permittivity of the dielectric material
A is the surface area of each metallic plate, and
d is the distance between the two plates
The capacitance is also said to be equal to the ratio of the charge on one plate of the capacitor to the voltage difference between the two plates.
