Rocky Mount police charged a student on Sunday for making threats on social media. The student allegedly posted threats targeting West Edgecombe Middle School and J.W. Parker Middle School and Edwards elementary. The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, in coordination with the Rocky Mount Police Department, informed the public on Saturday that they were aware of the threats and had launched an investigation.

Through their investigation, the Criminal Investigations Division traced the IP address linked to the social media account, which led them to the student's location. The student confessed to creating the account and has been charged under GS 14-277.6 for communicating threats of mass violence on school property. Investigators also took the student’s phone.

"Our Criminal Investigations Division is collaborating closely with the Nash County Sheriff's Office and the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office," RMPD stated. "Together, we are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure the safety and security of all schools and to address any potential threats." Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rocky Mount Police Department at (252) 972-1411.
