The Black Guillemot or Tystie Cepphus grylle is a charming and endearing little auk, and at certain locations this bird may be observed at close range from the shore as it fishes. This was certainly the case at Lerwick, Shetland, where these film-clips and still photographs were taken, on a rather windy day, as will be evident from the height of the waves. These birds will dive frequently, frustratingly often just after they have been focussed on, and in clear water it is possible to see how they use their wings to propel themselves as they submerge. The white patches on their wings are particularly visible.
