Programming Array Logic:
The PAL is one type of programmable logic device. In PAL, the AND gate array is programmable while the OR gate array is fixed. (The number of AND gates that can be connected with the OR gate is fixed).
In some PAL outputs, there is feedback from the output to the input side.
By reusing the output of the OR gate (by providing feedback to the input side), it is possible to reuse the product terms that is generated by the OR gate. And in this way, it is possible to implement a Boolean function with more product terms.
Apart from a programmable AND gate array and fixed OR gate array, the PAL also consists of output logic blocks/output macrocells. By configuring the output macrocell, it is possible to provide various output functionality in PAL.
In this video, the basic architecture of PAL, and the internal circuit of the output macrocell are explained in detail.
